Over 1,300 student-athletes are set to storm the field in Season 4 of the Nigerian Secondary School Flag Football League (NSSFFL), in what promises to be Nigeria’s most electrifying grassroots sports event yet. The league was officially launched Thursday at Haven Tower, Agidingbi, Ikeja, sending ripples of excitement across the nation.
The league, which blends teamwork, leadership, and elite-level competition, will feature 11 states, including Lagos—the defending champion in both male and female categories—going head-to-head from October 27 to November 6 in preliminary rounds that will culminate in a national showdown.
Lawrence Ojaideh, NAFA Secretary General, stunned the audience by revealing a new pipeline linking secondary school stars to tertiary-level competition via the upcoming Nigeria Collegiate Flag Football League. “We are turning participation into progression, and potential into performance,” he declared.
Former secondary-school players have already made history, representing Nigeria at the inaugural IFAF Africa Flag Football Championship, where both men’s and women’s teams won gold.
The league has attracted major sponsors, including Browns Nigeria (in partnership with the Cleveland Browns), Unique Open University, Allez Charis Gas Limited, and more, reflecting the growing prestige of Nigeria’s flag football movement.
Oluwatobi Abe, league coordinator, confirmed a bold expansion strategy: “We deliberately took the league to regions where we had little presence before. This season is truly nationwide.”
With massive prize money, scholarships, and a platform to the national team, Season 4 is shaping up to be Nigeria’s ultimate stage for young flag football talent.
