Commercial driver from Mkpat Enin LGA convicted on sexual assault charges involving his biological children
A commercial driver and mechanic from Ikot Ekop in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Okon Jimmy Ama, has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for raping his two biological daughters.
The conviction followed court proceedings in which the prosecution presented evidence establishing the charges against the defendant. The court found him guilty of sexually assaulting the minors and handed down a 14-year custodial sentence in line with relevant criminal laws.
Legal observers note that the ruling reflects ongoing efforts by the judiciary and law enforcement authorities to strengthen accountability in cases involving sexual violence, particularly crimes committed against children. Child protection advocates have consistently called for stricter enforcement of laws designed to safeguard minors from abuse and exploitation.
The case has drawn public attention within the state, with community leaders and civil society organizations reiterating the importance of reporting suspected abuse and supporting survivors through legal and social welfare systems.
Authorities continue to encourage residents to speak up against sexual and gender-based violence, emphasizing that perpetrators will face prosecution under the law. The judgment underscores the seriousness of offenses involving minors and reinforces the legal consequences attached to such crimes in Nigeria.
