Federal Government Bans Importation of Accident Damaged Vehicles

Policy aimed at strengthening road safety and reducing risks linked to unsafe vehicles

The Federal Government has announced an immediate ban on the importation of accident damaged vehicles into Nigeria as part of efforts to improve road safety and protect motorists across the country.

Authorities said the decision was taken to address the growing concerns over the influx of vehicles that had previously been involved in serious accidents abroad and were later imported into Nigeria for resale and use on public roads. Many of these vehicles, commonly referred to as accident vehicles, are often repaired before being sold to unsuspecting buyers.

Government officials explained that such vehicles may pose significant safety risks because structural damage from previous accidents can compromise the overall strength and reliability of the car even after repairs. This, they said, increases the chances of mechanical failure and road accidents.

The ban is expected to strengthen vehicle safety standards in Nigeria’s automobile market and ensure that only roadworthy vehicles are imported into the country. Regulatory agencies responsible for port inspections and vehicle clearance have been directed to enforce the new policy strictly.

Industry observers say the move could influence Nigeria’s used vehicle market, which relies heavily on imported automobiles. However, safety advocates have welcomed the decision, noting that stricter import regulations could help reduce road accidents and protect road users.
