The Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed calls for the removal of its chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), while responding to what it described as widespread misconceptions surrounding the commission’s proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise.
INEC stated that recent claims and public commentary calling for the chairman’s removal are based on misunderstandings about the purpose and scope of the planned voter revalidation process. According to the commission, the exercise is aimed at strengthening the integrity of the voter register and ensuring that electoral records remain accurate and up to date.

Officials explained that the revalidation initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve Nigeria’s electoral system by verifying existing voter data, identifying outdated records, and maintaining a credible voter database for future elections. The commission emphasised that such exercises are routine administrative measures designed to enhance transparency and efficiency in the electoral process.
INEC also reiterated its commitment to conducting elections that meet democratic standards, noting that the commission operates within the framework of the law and established institutional procedures. It urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading misleading narratives that could undermine confidence in the electoral system.
The commission added that it will continue to engage stakeholders and provide further clarification about the voter revalidation process as preparations for future electoral activities progress across the country.
