A commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps has stated that motorists cannot legally drive in Nigeria using only a foreign driver’s licence without complying with Nigerian licensing regulations.

According to the official, individuals residing or operating vehicles in Nigeria are expected to possess valid driving documentation recognised under the country’s traffic and road safety laws. The clarification was issued as part of efforts to improve compliance with road regulations and ensure proper identification of drivers within the nation’s transport system.

The FRSC emphasized that while some temporary arrangements may apply to visitors or short-term residents under international driving conventions, long-term use of foreign licences without proper conversion or authorisation may violate existing laws.

Road safety officials also noted that enforcement measures are aimed at promoting accountability, enhancing road safety standards, and ensuring that all drivers operating within Nigeria are properly documented and trained according to national requirements.
