Commissioner says no police officer has the legal right to search a citizen's phone.
The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has advised residents not to allow any police officer to search their mobile phones, citing the abuse and extortion allegedly carried out by some officers.
Speaking on the issue, the police commissioner said, "Don't allow any police officer to search your phone, and we're saying this due to the abuse and extortive tendencies of some of our officers. No police officer has the right to search your phone."
The statement serves as a reminder to members of the public about their rights during interactions with law enforcement officers and underscores concerns over alleged misconduct by some personnel.
The commissioner urged residents to remain law-abiding while also being aware of their legal rights and to report any cases of harassment or extortion by police officers through the appropriate channels.
