The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has criticised comments attributed to the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, concerning the presidential ambition of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mr Peter Obi.
In a statement, the council insisted that no individual, regardless of political position or public office, has the authority to determine or dictate the political choices of Ndigbo.
UNIEC maintained that the people of the South-East have the constitutional right to freely support and vote for candidates of their choice without interference or intimidation.
The group urged political leaders to respect democratic principles, refrain from making statements capable of creating division, and allow citizens to exercise their rights in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the political interests and democratic freedoms of the Igbo people, stressing that electoral decisions should remain the exclusive preserve of the electorate.
