Security Expert and Public Safety Advocate Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has urged Nigerians to protect water sources that serve communities, warning against the indiscriminate disposal of refuse, chemicals and industrial waste into rivers, streams, lakes and other public water bodies.
In Series #117 of The Secure Mind, titled "Do Not Pollute Water That Serves the Community," Yusuf described clean water as an essential resource for human survival and a critical component of community health and security.
According to him, water is required for drinking, cooking, farming, sanitation and numerous other domestic and economic activities. He therefore stressed that protecting water sources should be regarded as a collective responsibility involving individuals, businesses, industries, communities and government authorities.
Yusuf cautioned factories and businesses against discharging untreated industrial waste, chemicals and other hazardous substances into water bodies. He also urged individuals to desist from dumping refuse and other pollutants into rivers, streams, drainage channels and lakes that may serve as sources of water for surrounding communities.
He noted that contaminated water can expose communities to serious health risks while also damaging aquatic ecosystems and threatening animals and other organisms that depend on clean water for survival.
Beyond the immediate health implications, the security expert explained that water pollution can create broader social and economic challenges by reducing access to safe water, affecting agricultural activities and placing additional pressure on already limited community resources.
He called on relevant authorities to strengthen environmental monitoring and enforcement while encouraging communities to report activities that threaten public water sources.
Yusuf also urged parents, schools and community leaders to educate younger generations about responsible environmental practices, noting that protecting natural resources today is essential to ensuring a safer and healthier future.
He emphasised that environmental protection should not be viewed solely as the responsibility of government agencies, as individual actions can collectively determine the quality and safety of resources available to an entire community.
