Prevent Fire Emergencies: Raise the Alarm, Evacuate and Fight Only Small Fires Safely

The Secure Mind expert urges Nigerians to understand basic fire-response measures and avoid dangerous actions when professional help is unavailable.

Security Expert and Public Safety Advocate Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has urged Nigerians to learn basic fire-safety measures that can help protect lives and property during emergencies.

In Series #121 of The Secure Mind, titled "Best Ways to Stop Fire in the Absence of Professionals," Yusuf stressed that the first few minutes after a fire starts can be critical.

He advised people to raise the alarm, evacuate occupants and call for professional help immediately, adding that people should only attempt to put out a small fire if it is safe to do so.

According to him, large fires or those producing heavy smoke should not be confronted, as attempting to fight them could put lives at greater risk.

Yusuf also emphasised the importance of using the correct extinguishing method for different types of fires.

For fires involving wood, paper and cloth, he said water or sand may be used where appropriate.

However, he warned that water must never be used on cooking oil, gas or electrical fires.

For cooking oil or gas fires, he advised users to turn off the gas supply if it is safe to do so and smother the fire with a suitable lid or sand.

In the case of an electrical fire, he advised switching off the power source if it is safe and using an appropriate fire extinguisher.

He further urged people moving through smoke to stay low and cover their nose and mouth, while prioritising evacuation over attempts to save property.

Yusuf stressed that basic knowledge of fire safety can help individuals respond appropriately before professional emergency responders arrive.

"Equipping yourself with basic fire safety knowledge can save lives."

He encouraged Nigerians to learn how to identify different types of fires and understand the appropriate first response, while avoiding actions that could worsen an emergency.

Just be good. Reflect. Stay alert.
