Anti-graft commission says weaknesses in Nigeria’s systems enabled Adeyemi to establish a purported fake government agency.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has revealed that weaknesses in Nigeria’s institutional systems helped Adeyemi set up what it described as a “fake agency.”

The commission said gaps in existing verification and oversight mechanisms created opportunities that were allegedly exploited to establish and operate the purported agency.

ICPC's disclosure has raised concerns about the effectiveness of systems designed to verify government institutions and prevent individuals from falsely presenting themselves or organisations as legitimate government bodies.

The anti-graft agency stressed the need for stronger institutional checks, verification procedures and inter-agency coordination to close loopholes that could be exploited for fraudulent activities.

It said addressing these weaknesses would help prevent similar schemes and strengthen public confidence in government institutions.

The case also underscores the importance of ensuring that members of the public can easily verify government agencies and their representatives before engaging with them or responding to their demands.
