The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in Lamu, with several African leaders, including Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, in attendance.
The refinery is designed to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day when completed and is expected to supply petroleum products to Kenya and other East African markets. Construction is targeted for completion around 2030.
Dangote has said the project is intended to strengthen Africa’s energy self-sufficiency, reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products and promote greater intra-African trade.
The project is, however, facing a legal dispute over land earmarked for the refinery. A Kenyan court ordered parties to maintain the status quo on the disputed site, but Dangote Group proceeded with the scheduled groundbreaking ceremony.
