FG Announces Plans for High-Speed Rail Line Linking Lagos to Maiduguri

Government says proposed project will strengthen connectivity between Nigeria’s commercial hub and the Northeast.

The Federal Government has announced plans to develop a high-speed rail line linking Lagos to Maiduguri, in a major proposed expansion of Nigeria’s rail transportation network.

The project is expected to improve connectivity between Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, and Maiduguri in Borno State, while facilitating the movement of passengers and goods across the country.

The proposed rail corridor could also support economic activities along the route by improving access between major cities and communities, reducing travel times and strengthening the national transportation system.

The announcement forms part of the government's broader efforts to modernise Nigeria's railway infrastructure and expand rail transportation as an alternative to road travel.

If implemented, the Lagos-Maiduguri high-speed rail connection would represent a significant addition to Nigeria's railway network and could enhance trade, mobility and regional integration across the country.
