Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has warned Nigerians considering irregular migration as a way out of economic hardship that the journey through Libya could expose them to even harsher and more dangerous conditions.

Soyombo raised the concern while highlighting the experiences of migrants who attempt to travel through irregular routes in search of better economic opportunities abroad.

According to the journalist, the difficult economic circumstances facing many Nigerians can make the prospect of leaving the country appear attractive. However, he cautioned that irregular migration routes can expose travellers to serious risks and living conditions that may be worse than those they hoped to escape.

Libya has become a major transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe through the Mediterranean. Many people who travel through the country irregularly face risks including detention, exploitation, human trafficking, violence and dangerous journeys across the desert and sea.

Soyombo’s warning therefore highlights the importance of understanding the realities of irregular migration before making the decision to embark on such journeys.

For Nigerians facing unemployment, rising living costs and other economic pressures, migration can appear to offer an immediate alternative. However, irregular routes often involve criminal networks, smugglers and unsafe transportation arrangements, leaving migrants vulnerable to exploitation.

The journalist’s message also underscores the need for Nigerians to distinguish between regular migration and dangerous irregular routes. Legal migration channels, where available, generally involve documented travel, valid visas or permits and recognised employment or study arrangements.

The warning comes amid continuing reports of Nigerians and other Africans attempting to cross the Sahara and Mediterranean in search of opportunities in Europe.

For prospective migrants, Soyombo’s message is essentially a caution against making life-changing decisions based solely on desperation or expectations of quick economic relief.

The dangers associated with irregular migration have continued to prompt calls for greater public awareness, stronger action against human traffickers and smugglers, and more legitimate economic and employment opportunities for young people in Nigeria.

While economic hardship can create powerful incentives to leave the country, the risks along irregular migration routes can be severe, making informed decisions and safer, legal migration options particularly important.
