The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has warned bakeries against using banned substances, including potassium bromate and saccharin, in bread production, while also cautioning against unapproved labels and advertisements.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a fresh warning to bakery operators across Nigeria over the use of prohibited substances and non-compliant practices in bread production.

The agency said bakeries found using banned substances, particularly potassium bromate and saccharin, could face regulatory sanctions, including closure, as part of efforts to protect consumers and ensure compliance with established food safety standards.

NAFDAC also raised concerns over the use of unapproved labels and advertisements on bread and other bakery products. According to the agency, food manufacturers are expected to ensure that product labels and promotional materials meet regulatory requirements and receive the necessary approval before being used in the market.

The warning underscores the agency’s ongoing efforts to strengthen oversight of the food manufacturing sector and prevent the production and distribution of products that could pose risks to public health or mislead consumers.

Bakeries and other food businesses are expected to comply with NAFDAC’s regulations governing the formulation, production, packaging, labelling and marketing of food products. Operators who fail to meet the requirements may be subjected to enforcement measures in accordance with applicable regulations.

The agency’s latest position is particularly significant for bread manufacturers, given the widespread consumption of bread across the country. NAFDAC has repeatedly emphasised the importance of ensuring that food products available to consumers are produced under acceptable hygienic and regulatory conditions.

The warning also places responsibility on bakery operators to review their production processes and ensure that all ingredients used in bread manufacturing are permitted under Nigeria’s food safety regulations.

Consumers, meanwhile, are encouraged to pay attention to the labels of packaged bread and other food products and to report suspected violations to the appropriate regulatory authorities.
