Nigeria’s aviation regulator says the penalty follows alleged violations of passenger protection requirements by the Rwandan carrier.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has fined RwandAir N15 million over consumer protection-related infractions, as the regulator intensifies enforcement of passenger rights within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The penalty was imposed following the regulator’s findings regarding the airline’s handling of consumer protection obligations under applicable Nigerian aviation regulations.
The NCAA, which is responsible for regulating civil aviation in Nigeria, has continued to place emphasis on ensuring that airlines operating in the country comply with established standards on passenger rights, service delivery and consumer protection.
Consumer protection requirements in the aviation sector cover areas including passengers’ rights, flight disruptions, communication with travellers and airlines’ obligations when passengers experience issues relating to their journeys.
The N15 million fine reflects the authority’s enforcement approach towards airlines that fail to comply with applicable regulatory requirements.
The NCAA has repeatedly stressed that airlines operating in Nigeria are expected to adhere to the country’s aviation regulations and treat passengers in accordance with established consumer protection standards.
The sanction also sends a signal to both domestic and international carriers that regulatory compliance remains a key requirement for operating within the Nigerian aviation market.
RwandAir, the national carrier of Rwanda, operates international services connecting Rwanda with destinations across Africa and beyond.
The NCAA’s action comes amid increasing attention to passenger experience in Nigeria’s aviation industry, with travellers frequently raising concerns over delays, cancellations, baggage issues and other service-related challenges.
By imposing financial penalties for regulatory infractions, the aviation authority seeks to encourage airlines to strengthen their consumer protection procedures and improve accountability in their dealings with passengers.
The regulator is expected to continue monitoring airline operations and enforcing compliance where violations are established.
