Pastor Bolaji Idowu has appealed to Dr Obafemi Hamzat to prioritise the welfare and economic wellbeing of young people if he becomes governor of Lagos State.
Idowu made the appeal while speaking about the challenges confronting young Nigerians, particularly the impact of economic hardship on the choices available to young people trying to survive.
“If you become governor, please make things easy for the young people. Because when things become too hard, young boys turn to fraud and young ladies are pushed into selling their bodies just to survive,” the pastor said.
He urged political leaders to pay greater attention to the economic conditions facing young people and create an environment where they can pursue legitimate opportunities without being driven into harmful or illegal activities.
According to him, economic hardship can place vulnerable young people under pressure and make them susceptible to negative influences when legitimate means of earning a livelihood become increasingly difficult.
Idowu’s comments also highlight the relationship between economic opportunity, youth empowerment and social stability. He suggested that providing young people with access to jobs, skills, entrepreneurship opportunities and other forms of support could help reduce their vulnerability to criminal activities and exploitation.
The appeal comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with rising living costs, unemployment concerns and pressure on household incomes.
Hamzat, a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has been mentioned in political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections, amid preparations within political parties for the forthcoming electoral cycle.
Idowu’s message therefore places emphasis on the need for political leadership to consider the realities facing young people when developing policies and programmes.
He stressed the importance of creating a society where young Nigerians can build sustainable livelihoods and pursue their ambitions without being forced by economic circumstances into choices that could jeopardise their future.
The pastor’s appeal has also sparked conversations about the responsibility of government at all levels to tackle the root causes of youth vulnerability through economic empowerment, education, employment and social support.
