The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a petition by the family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, seeking a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The development was disclosed by the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026. The lawyer said the police re-investigation is already ongoing and should not be confused with a separate court case recently dismissed by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to Ogungbe, the Aloba family submitted its petition directly to the Inspector-General of Police on April 14, 2026, and the petition was received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.
The petition raised concerns about what the family described as inconsistencies in the earlier investigative process and called for a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
Following the IGP’s approval, the petition was forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action. The family was subsequently informed that the matter had been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.
The family’s lawyer said a representative of the Aloba family had already been invited by the new investigative team and had engaged with the officers handling the matter.
He added that the family had continued to follow up with investigators and remained involved in the new investigative process.
The development comes days after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate suit seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death.
The suit, filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, was dismissed on September 25, 2026. Justice James Omotosho ruled on the application after considering the foundation’s legal standing in the matter.
However, the Aloba family has stressed that the court case was separate from its petition to the IGP. According to the family, the dismissed suit was neither instituted by the family nor filed with its authority or consent.
The family therefore urged the public not to interpret the court’s decision as an end to the police investigation arising from its own petition.
The Aloba family has also pledged to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant documents, information, witnesses and other materials that could assist in establishing the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
The family called on the police to conduct the fresh investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism, while examining all relevant persons and circumstances connected to the case.
The lawyers further said the family was not seeking to prejudge the outcome of the investigation or engage in a trial by media, but wanted a credible, comprehensive and transparent process capable of establishing the facts.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, and his death generated widespread public concern and calls for a thorough investigation. His remains were subsequently exhumed for an autopsy, while questions surrounding the circumstances of his death have continued to generate public interest.
With the IGP’s approval of the family’s petition, the police re-investigation is now proceeding through the Lagos State Police Command’s Special Enquiry Bureau, with the family saying it remains committed to cooperating with investigators.
The family’s position is that the renewed investigation should provide a comprehensive examination of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death and help establish the facts through due process.
