The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has expressed concern over what she described as widespread ignorance among Nigerians regarding food safety guidelines.
Adeyeye reportedly made the remark while speaking about the importance of public awareness and compliance with food safety requirements in Nigeria.
The NAFDAC boss said many consumers do not take the time to read or understand information provided on food products and official food safety guidance, potentially increasing their exposure to avoidable health risks.
She stressed the importance of consumers becoming more informed about the products they purchase and consume, including paying attention to labels, instructions and safety information.
Food safety remains a major public health concern, particularly in a country where consumers purchase food products from a wide range of formal and informal sources.
NAFDAC is responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, distribution, advertisement, sale and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices and other regulated products in Nigeria.
Adeyeye’s comments therefore highlight the role consumers play alongside manufacturers, vendors and regulators in ensuring food safety.
Consumers are generally encouraged to check product labels, expiry dates, storage instructions and other relevant information before purchasing or consuming packaged food products.
The NAFDAC Director-General’s remarks also come amid continued efforts by the agency to strengthen food safety regulation and increase public awareness about potentially harmful products and unsafe practices.
She urged Nigerians to take responsibility for their own safety by paying closer attention to food safety information rather than relying solely on regulators or manufacturers.
The comments have also renewed discussion about the need for stronger public education on food safety, particularly through simple and accessible information that consumers can easily understand and apply in their daily lives.
