Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, has described Covenant University as “God’s own new-generation Harvard,” expressing his vision for the institution as a centre of academic excellence and spiritual development.
Oyedepo, who established the university in Ota, Ogun State, said the institution represents a model of higher education that combines academic training with Christian values and principles.
Founded in 2002, Covenant University has grown into one of Nigeria’s prominent private universities, offering programmes across several disciplines, including engineering, management, information technology and the social sciences.
Harvard University, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is one of the world’s most recognised institutions of higher learning, with a long history of academic research, teaching and international influence.
Oyedepo’s comparison reflects his aspirations for Covenant University to attain a high standard of academic achievement while maintaining its religious identity and emphasis on character development.
The institution’s stated philosophy places importance on leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship and the development of graduates equipped to contribute to society.
The description of Covenant University as “God’s own new-generation Harvard” is a statement of Oyedepo’s vision for the institution rather than a formal academic ranking or an independently established equivalence between the two universities.
The remark has renewed attention on the ambitions of Nigerian private universities and their efforts to build internationally recognised academic institutions within the country.
