Peter Obi: “I Am Not Desperate to Be President, I’m Desperate to See Nigeria Work”

Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential aspirant Peter Obi has reiterated that his political ambition is driven by a desire to see Nigeria function effectively rather than by a personal determination to occupy the presidency.

Obi made the remarks while discussing his political plans and vision for Nigeria, stressing that his priority is the country’s progress and the wellbeing of its citizens.

“I am not desperate to be President. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” Obi said, adding that he would support whatever could make the country work, whether or not he personally occupies a political office.

According to the former governor, his vision is for a Nigeria where citizens can improve their lives through access to opportunities, education, employment and entrepreneurship.

He said he wants to see a country where “a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody,” highlighting the importance of creating opportunities for young Nigerians regardless of their background or connections.

Obi also argued that improving Nigeria requires addressing poverty and creating an environment where young people can participate meaningfully in the economy.

He said his interest in the presidency stems from his belief that he can contribute to fixing some of the country’s challenges, but maintained that his desire to see Nigeria succeed goes beyond holding public office.

“It doesn’t matter if Peter Obi is the president or not. So far, Nigeria is good; I’m fine with it,” he said in a separate interview, reiterating that his ultimate concern is the country’s progress.

The statement comes as political activities and discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to intensify.

Obi has been positioning his political message around economic development, poverty reduction, improved security, job creation, education and stronger public institutions.

He has also called for a political environment in which elections are free, fair and credible, arguing that greater confidence in the electoral process could encourage more Nigerians to participate.

While reiterating his interest in contesting for the presidency, Obi said his broader objective remains the development of a country where government delivers tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.

His comments have continued to feature prominently in discussions about political leadership and Nigeria’s future as parties and political figures prepare for the 2027 elections.
