American comedian and television host Steve Harvey has recounted how he discovered he owed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) approximately $22 million after the people responsible for handling his taxes allegedly failed to submit his returns and diverted funds intended for tax payments.

Harvey shared the experience during an appearance on the Earn Your Leisure podcast in March 2022, explaining that the problem came to light after his accountant died and a woman who worked in the office contacted his lawyer.

According to Harvey, the woman discovered seven years of tax documents on the office floor, with the forms signed and payment cheques attached.

“She had found on the floor all my tax forms for seven years, signed and with the checks stapled to it,” he recalled.

Harvey said he had believed his tax obligations were being handled because money corresponding to the expected payments was leaving his bank account. However, he alleged that the people managing his finances had been taking the money without submitting the tax returns and payments to the authorities.

“My lawyer called me, said, ‘Hey, man, we got a problem. You haven’t paid taxes in seven years,’” Harvey recounted.

The discovery left the entertainer facing a substantial tax liability, including accumulated penalties and interest. He said the amount owed had reached approximately $22 million.

The comedian described the situation as a frightening financial crisis, particularly because the outstanding obligation was his responsibility even though he believed he had entrusted the necessary paperwork and payments to professionals.

Harvey also recalled the emotional impact the revelation had on his marriage to his wife, Marjorie. He said she cried for two days after he explained the scale of the problem and the potential consequences for their finances.

Despite the shock, Harvey said he resolved to work his way out of the situation rather than allow the debt to destroy what he had built.

“I just went to work. I took every gig and every contract, and I worked and worked,” he said while recounting how he responded to the crisis.

According to Harvey, he accepted numerous professional opportunities and worked consistently while making payments towards the outstanding tax liability. He said the repayment arrangement required him to pay approximately $650,000 monthly, alongside meeting his ongoing tax obligations.

He described working through the financial burden for several years, maintaining that he did not miss a payment during the repayment period.

Harvey said a major business deal in 2012 eventually enabled him to clear the remaining debt. He explained that the deal provided the financial breakthrough he needed to settle the obligation and move beyond the crisis.

“And I got free,” he said, describing the relief he felt after resolving the situation.

The story has continued to attract attention because it illustrates the financial and emotional consequences that can arise when individuals entrust critical financial responsibilities to others without adequate oversight.

Harvey’s account also highlights the distinction between believing that tax payments have been made and ensuring that the relevant authorities have actually received them. Maintaining access to tax records, reviewing official account statements and independently confirming payments can help individuals identify discrepancies before they become serious problems.

The case serves as a reminder that even successful entertainers and businesspeople can face significant financial difficulties when essential administrative responsibilities are mishandled.

Although Harvey said he ultimately overcame the crisis through sustained work and a major business transaction, his experience underscores the importance of financial accountability, independent verification and careful monitoring of professional advisers.

His account does not establish whether any individual involved was criminally convicted, and the allegations concerning the handling of his tax payments should therefore be understood as his account of the events rather than a judicial finding of guilt.
