Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has drawn attention to a reported connection between a former employee at the company’s Austin factory and a fatal shooting in downtown Austin, recounting an alleged workplace assault that he said preceded the deadly incident.
In remarks attributed to Musk, the billionaire said the employee had been dismissed from Tesla in December of the previous year after allegedly assaulting a female colleague who accidentally stepped on his prayer rug inside the factory.
Musk claimed the woman had not expected someone to be praying in the workplace and inadvertently stepped on the rug. He alleged that the employee responded with a violent physical assault, leading to his dismissal.
According to Musk’s account, the former employee subsequently went on to kill three students at a bar in downtown Austin several months later. The remarks have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the alleged workplace incident, the later shooting and whether earlier warning signs were adequately addressed.
Musk also used the account to question whether people with such histories should be allowed into the United States, framing the issue around immigration screening and public safety.
