US President Donald Trump has drawn attention after recounting a humorous exchange in which he claimed to have asked Google Maps to rename the Atlantic Ocean the “Trump Ocean”.

In the anecdote, Trump said he contacted Google CEO Sundar Pichai about the proposed change but was told that renaming an ocean would be different from changing the name of a smaller geographical feature.

According to Trump’s account, Pichai responded: “No, no, no. This time I’m not doing it.”

Trump further recounted that the Google chief explained that oceans cover multiple countries, making such a change inappropriate.

“So we’ll probably pass. Let’s keep it the Atlantic Ocean,” Trump said, appearing to abandon the idea.

The story prompted amusement because of its exaggerated suggestion that one of the world’s major oceans could be renamed after a sitting US president at his request.

Trump has previously attracted international attention over proposals and decisions involving the renaming of geographical locations and public institutions. His administration has also made the use of his name on government-related projects a subject of public discussion.

However, the exchange with Pichai, as recounted by Trump, has not been independently verified. It should therefore be treated as an anecdote rather than a confirmed conversation between the two men.

The Atlantic Ocean remains its internationally recognised name, spanning the waters between the Americas, Europe and Africa.
