Abeokuta Welcomes Reuben Abati Home for His 60th Birthday Celebration Today

After marking the milestone in Lagos, the renowned journalist and broadcaster will be honoured again today by family and old friends in a private Abeokuta reception.

Renowned journalist, broadcaster, and public affairs analyst Dr. Reuben Abati will today, Sunday, be celebrated in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as his family, old school friends, and close associates host a private reception in honour of his 60th birthday.

The Abeokuta event, being coordinated by Ralph Omosanya Abati, the celebrant’s younger brother, is designed as a warm, intimate gathering for close friends, community members, and special guests who were unable to attend the earlier celebration held in Lagos.

Abati had earlier marked his milestone birthday in grand style in Lagos with a well-attended ceremony and book launch at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island. The Lagos event drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, respected cleric Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, traditional rulers, senior journalists, and political figures.

The occasion also featured the public presentation of Abati’s three new publications — Portraits: People, Politics and Society, How Goodluck Jonathan Became President, and A Love Letter and Other Stories. The works chronicle his reflections on leadership, politics, and society through his decades of media and public service.

In Lagos, tributes poured in for the veteran journalist, with Obasanjo describing him as “a brilliant mind and one of Ogun State’s finest exports,” while Jonathan hailed his “unwavering professionalism and loyalty.”

Today’s Abeokuta event is expected to be more relaxed and personal, celebrating not only Abati’s professional legacy but also his enduring friendships and family bonds.
