Nigerian Students With Valid F1 and J1 Visas Not Affected by Presidential Proclamation, US Mission Clarifies

Diplomatic mission reassures international students amid concerns over new immigration directive

The United States Mission has clarified that Nigerian students holding valid F1 and J1 visas are not affected by the recent Presidential Proclamation, addressing concerns raised among prospective and returning international students.

In an official statement, the US Mission explained that individuals who currently possess valid F1 student visas and J1 exchange visitor visas remain eligible to travel and continue their academic or exchange programmes in the United States, provided they comply with existing immigration regulations.

The clarification follows widespread anxiety triggered by the announcement of a new Presidential Proclamation related to immigration and travel policies. Many students and families had sought confirmation on whether the directive would impact ongoing studies, research placements, or approved exchange programmes.

According to the mission, the proclamation does not revoke or invalidate previously issued F1 and J1 visas. Students are, however, advised to ensure that their documentation, including passports, visa stamps, and school-issued forms, remain valid before making travel arrangements.

The US Mission also encouraged students to monitor official communication channels for updates and to rely on verified sources for accurate immigration information. Prospective applicants were reminded to follow established visa application procedures and attend scheduled interviews as required.

The reassurance is expected to provide relief to Nigerian students currently enrolled in American institutions and those preparing to resume academic sessions, reinforcing continuity in educational and cultural exchange ties between Nigeria and the United States.
