Founder urges Nigerians to see infertility as a medical condition, not a curse, as initiative seeks support to help couples access fertility treatment.
Hopeful Smile for Couples Initiative has led an Infertility Awareness Walk in Lagos, calling for an end to the stigma, discrimination and harmful beliefs surrounding infertility in society.
The peaceful awareness campaign, held on Saturday, July 4, 2026, was themed, “Understanding Infertility: A Medical Condition, Not a Curse – Stop the Stigma.”
The walk brought together healthcare professionals, reproductive health advocates, community leaders, volunteers and members of the public who joined the campaign to promote greater understanding and compassion for individuals and couples experiencing fertility challenges.
Participants marched from Abule Egba through major streets, carrying banners and placards with messages encouraging public education, empathy and support for people struggling with infertility.
Speaking during the event, the Founder of Hopeful Smile for Couples Initiative, Mrs. Fasore Eyeola Christianah, said infertility can affect both men and women and should never be treated as a source of shame, punishment or a curse.
She called on families, religious institutions and communities to support people facing fertility challenges rather than subject them to blame, discrimination and social exclusion.
According to her, many individuals and couples already face significant emotional and financial pressure while trying to have children, making support and understanding from society particularly important.
Christianah also stressed the need for timely medical evaluation and proper treatment, noting that better public education would help correct misconceptions about infertility and encourage people to seek appropriate medical care.
She further called for partnerships and financial support from well-meaning Nigerians, corporate organisations, philanthropists and development partners to help couples who cannot afford fertility treatment.
According to the initiative, the high cost of fertility treatment, particularly Assisted Reproductive Technology, has placed family-building options beyond the reach of many couples.
The organisation said donations, sponsorships and partnerships could help reduce the financial burden of treatment and give more couples an opportunity to pursue their dream of parenthood through safe and evidence-based medical options.
“Every contribution, regardless of its size, brings us closer to transforming lives and building happier families. Together, we can make the dream of parenthood a reality for many,” the initiative said.
Hopeful Smile for Couples Initiative said the awareness walk forms part of its ongoing efforts to promote reproductive health education, support families experiencing infertility and build a society where understanding and empathy replace stigma.
The event ended with participants reaffirming their commitment to sustained public awareness and encouraging Nigerians to support individuals and couples on their journey to parenthood through understanding, acceptance and access to quality healthcare.
