Nigerian-born Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye is renowned for his pioneering work in fetal and neonatal surgery, including a remarkable procedure that involved operating on a baby before birth.
In 2016, Olutoye and his team at Texas Children's Hospital operated on Lynlee Hope, a 23-week-old fetus who had a large sacrococcygeal teratoma, a tumour that develops near the baby's tailbone and can threaten the baby's life.
The surgical team carefully brought the fetus partially out of the mother's womb while maintaining the connection to the placenta. They removed the tumour before returning the baby to the uterus to continue developing.
The pregnancy continued, and Lynlee was later delivered at 36 weeks in good health. The extraordinary case earned international attention and was celebrated as a major achievement in fetal surgery.
Olutoye studied medicine at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria and later became a leading pediatric and fetal surgeon in the United States. He currently serves as Surgeon-in-Chief at Nationwide Children's Hospital and is a professor at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
