Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has shared a personal childhood experience about growing up in a white garment church, revealing how her mother defended and protected her when some people attempted to label her negatively.
In a reflective account, the actress recalled that during her childhood, children who behaved in unusually strong or energetic ways were sometimes viewed with suspicion in certain religious settings. According to her, some church members believed such behaviour could have spiritual implications and would often gather around the child to pray while making intense spiritual declarations.
Akindele recounted that on one occasion, someone in the church suggested that there might be something spiritually wrong with her. However, she said her mother immediately rejected the idea and refused to allow anyone to place such a label on her.
She explained that her mother firmly told those present to stop making negative pronouncements about her life. Despite the incident, her mother continued taking her to church but made it clear that no one was allowed to describe her child in harmful or negative ways.
The award-winning actress said the experience left a lasting impression on her, teaching her an important lesson about parental responsibility and advocacy.
According to her, the moment showed her that parents must be willing to stand up for their children, especially in situations where others may misunderstand them or attempt to define them unfairly.
Akindele noted that the support and protection she received from her mother played a key role in shaping her confidence and outlook on life, emphasizing that children often need strong voices to defend them when they cannot fully defend themselves.
