The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene to cushion the effects of the recent spike in petrol prices on Nigerian workers and households.
The labour union urged the government to introduce a cost-of-living allowance for workers, implement a wage award, provide tax relief measures and take immediate steps to revive the country’s public refineries.
According to the NLC, the rising cost of fuel has significantly increased transportation expenses, food prices and other basic living costs, placing additional pressure on workers and their families.
Labour leaders stressed that without urgent economic relief measures, many Nigerians could face deeper financial hardship as inflation and fuel price adjustments continue to affect daily living.

The union also emphasised the need for the government to prioritise the rehabilitation and efficient operation of Nigeria’s public refineries in order to reduce reliance on fuel imports and stabilise the domestic energy market.
The NLC said the proposed measures would help ease the burden on workers while supporting broader efforts to stabilise the economy and protect citizens from worsening cost-of-living challenges.
