The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has granted import permits for petrol to six depot owners and petroleum marketers as part of efforts to ensure adequate fuel supply in the country.
According to the regulatory authority, the permits will allow the approved marketers to import Premium Motor Spirit into Nigeria to complement domestic supply and maintain stability in the downstream petroleum sector.
Industry stakeholders say the decision is aimed at preventing shortages and ensuring that fuel distribution across the country remains steady, particularly as market players adjust to evolving supply dynamics.
The NMDPRA noted that the approval of import permits forms part of its regulatory responsibility to oversee petroleum product availability, encourage competition among marketers, and maintain efficiency in the supply chain.
Analysts say allowing multiple operators to import petrol could help improve market liquidity and reduce the risk of supply disruptions while supporting broader efforts to stabilize fuel availability nationwide.
