Ondo State Introduces Entertainment Tax on Weddings, Burials and Social Events

Event organisers to pay between ₦20,000 and ₦25,000 while corporate gatherings will attract ₦50,000 levy

The Ondo State Government has introduced a new entertainment tax on social events across the state, including weddings, burials, naming ceremonies and birthday celebrations.

Under the new directive, organisers of such events will be required to pay a levy ranging between ₦20,000 and ₦25,000, depending on the nature and scale of the gathering. Corporate events and larger organised functions will attract a higher fee of ₦50,000.

Officials say the policy is part of the state government’s efforts to expand internally generated revenue while also strengthening regulatory oversight of large social gatherings.

According to authorities, the levy will apply to event organisers hosting celebrations in halls, open venues, and other designated event locations within the state.

The introduction of the tax has sparked conversations among residents and event planners, with some expressing concerns about the potential impact on the cost of hosting ceremonies and celebrations.

State officials, however, maintain that the policy is designed to formalise event-related activities and contribute to revenue generation needed for public services and infrastructure development.
