Indian Woman Dupes Authorities Into Cleaning Open Drain After False Emergency Call

Police and civic workers spend hours clearing filthy drain following fabricated claim that a person had fallen inside

An unusual incident in India has sparked widespread reactions after a woman reportedly tricked police officers and civic sanitation teams into cleaning an open drain for nearly three hours by falsely claiming that someone had fallen into it.

According to local reports, the woman contacted emergency services and raised an alarm that a person had slipped into a dangerously clogged open drainage channel in her neighbourhood. Acting on the distress call, police officers and municipal sanitation workers were immediately deployed to the scene to carry out a rescue operation.

Upon arrival, the teams began an intensive clean-up of the drain, removing sludge, waste, and debris in an effort to locate the alleged victim. The operation reportedly lasted several hours, during which workers thoroughly cleared the drain under difficult and unsanitary conditions.

It was only after the prolonged effort that authorities realised no individual had fallen into the drain and that the claim was false. Investigations later revealed that the woman had deliberately made the report to compel authorities to clean the open drain, which residents had reportedly complained about for a long time without action.

The incident has since gone viral, igniting debates online about public frustration with neglected infrastructure, misuse of emergency services, and the lengths citizens may go to in order to draw attention to unresolved civic issues. While some social media users criticised the woman for wasting public resources and time, others described the act as a reflection of systemic failures in responding to legitimate sanitation concerns.

Authorities have warned that making false emergency reports is a serious offence that could attract legal consequences, stressing that such actions divert resources from genuine emergencies. The incident has also renewed calls for improved responsiveness to public sanitation complaints to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
