Security expert Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has advised parents and guardians to take an active role in guiding their children and wards on how to choose friends who will positively influence their behaviour and development.
Yusuf gave the advice in Series #141 of The Secure Mind, titled “Teach Your Wards How to Choose Friends Who Positively Influence Them.”
According to him, while parents often invest considerable time and resources in raising their children, they must also pay attention to the people their children associate with.
He explained that positive friendships can encourage good behaviour, discipline and responsible decision-making, while negative influences can expose children to behaviours and choices that may have harmful consequences.
Yusuf therefore urged parents to regularly engage their children in conversations about their friendships and social activities.
He advised parents to understand who their children's friends are, what activities they engage in and the values that influence their behaviour, while teaching them how to recognise both positive and negative influences.
The security expert, however, stressed that parental guidance should not mean completely controlling children's friendships. Instead, parents should provide the necessary direction while helping children develop sound judgment and the ability to build healthy relationships.
He noted that children who are properly guided are more likely to recognise unhealthy relationships and make responsible choices about the people they allow into their personal space.
Yusuf also encouraged parents to create an environment where children feel comfortable discussing their friendships and experiences without fear of harsh judgment.
He said open communication between parents and children can help parents identify potential negative influences early and provide appropriate guidance before problems escalate.
A security-conscious parent, he added, understands that protecting children also involves paying attention to their social environment and the influences shaping their decisions.
“Ethically grounded children are careful in selecting who they allow as friends.”
Yusuf urged parents and guardians to remain actively involved in the social development of their children while equipping them with the values, confidence and judgment needed to make wise choices.
