Veteran New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park film franchise, has died at the age of 78.

His family announced that Neill died on Monday in Sydney, Australia, describing his passing as "sudden and unexpected." They also noted that the award-winning actor remained cancer-free at the time of his death after previously battling a rare form of blood cancer.
