Peaceful and secure communities are built not only through effective law enforcement and public safety measures but also through responsible communication and mutual respect among citizens, according to Security Expert and Public Safety Advocate, Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon.
In the latest edition of The Secure Mind series, titled "Speaking Evil of Others Weakens Peace and Security," Yusuf emphasised that the words people choose in their daily interactions have far-reaching consequences for social harmony, public trust and community security.
He explained that while physical security often receives significant attention, verbal conduct and responsible communication are equally important in creating an environment where peace can flourish. According to him, reckless speech, false accusations, rumours and deliberate attempts to tarnish another person's reputation have the potential to divide communities, damage relationships and create unnecessary hostility.
Yusuf noted that the rapid spread of information through social media and digital platforms has made it easier than ever for misinformation and harmful narratives to circulate, stressing that individuals must exercise greater caution before sharing information or making public statements.
He warned that spreading false information or engaging in malicious gossip not only harms individuals but also weakens the bonds of trust that hold communities together. When trust is eroded, he said, suspicion, fear and conflict often replace cooperation, making it more difficult to maintain public safety and peaceful coexistence.
According to him, a truly security-conscious individual understands that responsible speech is a civic responsibility. Such individuals take time to verify facts before sharing information, avoid inflammatory comments, treat others with dignity and communicate in ways that encourage understanding rather than division.
Yusuf stressed that every citizen has a role to play in promoting peace through responsible communication, adding that choosing words carefully can prevent unnecessary disputes, reduce tensions and strengthen unity within families, workplaces and society at large.
He urged members of the public to reject rumours, avoid defamatory statements and cultivate a culture of respectful dialogue, especially during periods of social or political tension when misinformation can easily escalate into larger security concerns.
"As citizens, we must recognise that security begins with our everyday actions, including the way we speak about one another. Responsible speech strengthens peace, while careless words can weaken the security of a community," he said.
He encouraged Nigerians to make integrity, truthfulness and respect the foundation of their communication, noting that peaceful societies are sustained when people choose honesty over falsehood, understanding over hostility and unity over division.
