The World Bank has warned that Nigeria risks missing out on the global artificial intelligence (AI) revolution unless it urgently embraces the technology and adapts it to the country's unique social and economic realities.
According to the global financial institution, while AI presents enormous opportunities to boost productivity, improve public service delivery, expand access to education and healthcare, and drive innovation, Nigeria must take deliberate steps to ensure the technology is developed and deployed in ways that address local challenges.
The World Bank stressed that building digital infrastructure, strengthening internet connectivity, investing in quality education and digital skills, supporting AI research, and creating policies that encourage responsible innovation are critical to positioning Nigeria as a competitive player in the global AI economy.
It noted that adapting AI solutions to local languages, cultures and business environments would be essential for achieving widespread adoption and ensuring that the benefits of the technology reach businesses, government institutions and citizens alike.
The institution added that countries that fail to invest in AI and related digital technologies risk falling behind in economic growth, innovation and global competitiveness as artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries and labour markets worldwide.
The World Bank urged Nigeria to accelerate its digital transformation efforts, saying timely investment and policy reforms would enable the country to harness AI as a catalyst for inclusive economic development and long-term prosperity.
