President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the legacy of Nigeria's former Head of State, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, remains vital to the country's unity and nation-building efforts.
Tinubu made the remark while reflecting on Aguiyi-Ironsi's contributions to Nigeria's history, noting that his commitment to national unity continues to serve as an important reference point for fostering peace, stability and cohesion across the country.
The President stressed the need for Nigerians to draw lessons from the nation's history by promoting unity, tolerance and mutual understanding regardless of ethnic, religious or political differences.
According to Tinubu, preserving the ideals of national integration championed by past leaders is essential to building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
He urged citizens to remain committed to peaceful coexistence and collective progress, emphasizing that national unity remains the foundation for sustainable development and lasting stability.
Aguiyi-Ironsi served as Nigeria's first military Head of State in 1966 following the country's first military coup before he was assassinated later that year during the counter-coup of July 1966.
