Northumbria Police say 66-year-old Glenn Gibbins will face court over a 2024 post investigated under the Communications Act 2003.
A UK councillor, Glenn Gibbins, has been charged over an allegedly offensive social media post referencing the Nigerian community, in a case that has drawn significant public attention in the United Kingdom.
Northumbria Police said the 66-year-old Sunderland councillor was charged under the Communications Act 2003 in connection with a social media post he allegedly made in 2024. The matter was investigated after the post came to the attention of authorities in May 2026, following his election as a councillor.
According to police, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised the charge after reviewing the evidence. Gibbins is scheduled to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on August 21, 2026.
The case relates to a post that allegedly contained offensive remarks about the Nigerian community. Police have urged members of the public not to speculate or comment in a way that could prejudice the ongoing legal proceedings.
Gibbins, a member of Reform UK, had previously faced criticism and party disciplinary action after the resurfacing of the 2024 post shortly after his election. The latest criminal charge marks a new phase in the case, which will now be determined by the courts.
