Experts have urged Nigerians planning to relocate abroad to prioritize proper planning, accurate information and legal migration pathways to avoid costly mistakes that could undermine their future.
The advice was given during the fifth edition of Perspectives with Simiat Abaru, a public affairs programme themed "Japa: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."
Speaking at the event, Bukola Alphonso-Olarewaju, a United States-based clinical social worker and event planner, said migration can provide significant opportunities for personal and professional growth, but stressed that intending migrants must understand the immigration requirements of their chosen destination and avoid relying on misinformation or shortcuts.
She warned that many prospective migrants have experienced visa denials, deportation and lengthy travel bans after providing inaccurate information during immigration processes. She therefore encouraged applicants, particularly those with complex visa cases, to seek professional guidance before submitting their applications.
Sharing his experience as a Nigerian living in Canada, Smith Barile said adaptability, resilience and continuous learning are essential qualities for anyone planning to settle abroad. He advised intending migrants to prepare for cultural adjustments while remaining committed to their long-term personal and career goals.
Also speaking, Dr. Segun Awode challenged the popular description of migration as "brain drain," arguing that it is more accurately described as "brain waste." He explained that many highly skilled Nigerian professionals initially accept jobs below their qualifications before gradually rebuilding their careers in their new countries. According to him, weak governance, limited economic opportunities and systemic challenges continue to push skilled Nigerians to seek better prospects abroad.
The panelists agreed that while migration can provide access to quality education, improved healthcare, advanced research opportunities and better living standards, it also contributes to the loss of skilled professionals needed for Nigeria's development.
They called on governments at all levels to create an enabling environment that allows citizens to thrive at home, while advising Nigerians who choose to relocate to do so through legal, informed and carefully planned processes.
