MTN Group is set to develop AI-enabled data centres with an initial capacity of about 150 megawatts (MW) across Nigeria and South Africa through a new venture with a UAE-backed investor.
The project will be developed through Africa Data Hub Holding, a venture established by MTN and an undisclosed UAE-backed data-centre investment platform. MTN will hold a minority stake, while its partner is expected to provide most of the capital and technical expertise.
MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita said the initial phase would target about 150MW of AI data-centre capacity across Nigeria and South Africa, with further expansion dependent on demand for computing infrastructure.
The facilities are expected to support artificial intelligence workloads, cloud services and other high-performance computing needs, while also providing capacity that can be rented to hyperscalers, businesses and governments.
The development comes as demand for AI computing infrastructure grows across Africa, where data-centre capacity remains limited compared with other regions.
In Nigeria, the project will build on MTN’s existing investment in digital infrastructure, including its 9MW Sifiso Dabengwa Data Centre in Lagos, which was launched in July 2026.
The planned investment is expected to strengthen Africa’s capacity to process and store data locally while supporting the growth of AI, cloud computing and other digital services across the continent.
