The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has warned Nigerians against paying money for bail at police stations, stressing that the law does not permit anyone to demand payment for bail.
The police spokesman said members of the public should not comply with demands for money in exchange for bail at any police station.
He advised anyone who is asked to pay for bail to leave the station and contact the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to report the incident.
“The law does not allow anyone to pay for bail at any police station. If you’re asked to pay for bail, simply walk outside and call the IGP,” the spokesman said.
The warning comes amid concerns over alleged extortion and unlawful demands for money from suspects and their relatives during police processes.
The spokesman urged Nigerians to report any police officer or personnel who demands money as a condition for granting bail.
He said such reports would help the authorities identify and address misconduct within the force while protecting members of the public from unlawful charges.
