Children are the future of every society, and the values and behaviours they develop from an early age play an important role in shaping the kind of adults they eventually become. Respect, obedience, punctuality, neatness, honesty, fairness and respect for the rule of law are among the values that help build responsible individuals and contribute to a safer and more orderly society.
Children should understand that, regardless of how old they become, their parents and guardians remain important figures who can provide guidance, wisdom and direction. The saying that charity begins at home reminds us that the values children learn within the family should be reflected in their behaviour and interactions with others.
Parents are a child’s first teachers and mentors. Children should learn from the positive lessons, discipline and experiences of their parents and apply those values in their relationships with siblings, friends, neighbours and members of the wider society.
There may also be occasions when disagreements arise between parents or other members of the family. Children may not always understand the circumstances surrounding such disagreements. They should therefore avoid taking sides or allowing themselves to become instruments of conflict. Where necessary, children should respectfully allow the adults involved to resolve their differences.
Respect should not be limited to parents, siblings and elders. Children should also learn to respect other people, public institutions and the laws of society. A child who understands responsibility, respects boundaries and obeys reasonable laws contributes positively to the safety and wellbeing of the community.
Security consciousness begins with good values and responsible behaviour. A child who understands the importance of discipline, respect and accountability is better equipped to make responsible decisions and recognise situations that may pose risks.
Good behaviour should not be motivated solely by the fear of punishment. Rather, children should develop strong moral values that guide their decisions, relationships and conduct even when no one is watching.
Quote:
“Children should reflect the discipline, ethical values and good moral behaviour they are taught at home.”
Just be good. Reflect. Stay alert.
