Drivers and vehicle owners need to exercise extra caution during the rainy season, particularly when travelling through unfamiliar areas. Heavy rainfall can quickly alter road conditions, turning familiar routes into potentially dangerous terrain.
During a heavy downpour, drivers should never underestimate the danger posed by floodwater. A road that is normally safe to use may suddenly become submerged, concealing deep channels, potholes, damaged sections or open drainage systems. Floodwater can also affect a vehicle’s stability, traction and control, creating serious risks for both drivers and passengers.
Drivers should maintain professionalism, patience and sound judgment whenever they are behind the wheel, whether travelling within their community or navigating unfamiliar terrain. When visibility becomes poor or floodwater appears unsafe to cross, slowing down, stopping at a safe location or waiting for the rain and water level to reduce may be the safer decision.
Young and inexperienced drivers should also receive proper guidance on when to continue a journey and when to stop, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. Understanding when not to drive through floodwater is an important aspect of responsible driving.
A security-conscious driver or passenger should think carefully before attempting to cross floodwater, even when travelling on a familiar route. Knowing a road well does not eliminate the dangers that can arise when heavy rainfall causes flooding.
Safety should always take precedence over speed or the pressure to complete a journey.
