The Federal Government has said it is collaborating with relevant agencies, including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), to create opportunities for Nigerian youths to acquire skills relevant to the demands of the 21st-century job market.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this while highlighting government efforts to improve opportunities available to young Nigerians and equip them with skills needed to remain competitive in a rapidly changing economy.
According to the minister, the collaboration with development partners is aimed at strengthening access to skills development and creating pathways through which young people can acquire knowledge and competencies that align with current labour-market demands.
The initiative is expected to support young Nigerians in developing practical and modern skills that can improve their employability and ability to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
The Federal Government’s engagement with organisations such as UNICEF and the ILO also reflects the growing need for stronger partnerships between government and international development institutions in addressing youth unemployment, skills gaps and changing workplace requirements.
As technology continues to reshape industries and the nature of work, young people increasingly require skills beyond traditional academic qualifications. Digital competence, entrepreneurship, creativity, problem-solving, communication and other transferable skills are becoming increasingly important in the modern workplace.
Olawande said the government remains focused on ensuring that Nigerian youths are not left behind as the global economy evolves, stressing the importance of providing them with opportunities to acquire relevant skills and prepare for the future of work.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to harness Nigeria’s large youth population as an asset for economic growth, innovation and national development.
With appropriate training, access to opportunities and stronger links between education and the labour market, the government believes young Nigerians can become better positioned to contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic development while competing for opportunities both locally and internationally.
