Love Alone Not Enough to Sustain Modern Relationships, Experts Say

The Federal Government says at least 200 new telecommunications sites will become operational before December 2026 as part of a nationwide infrastructure project aimed at expanding connectivity to more than 20 million Nigerians currently without adequate telecom services.

The Federal Government has announced plans to activate at least 200 new telecommunications sites across the country before the end of 2026.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, disclosed this while outlining ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to expand telecommunications infrastructure and improve digital connectivity across underserved and unserved communities.

According to the minister, the infrastructure project is expected to connect more than 20 million Nigerians who currently lack adequate access to telecommunications services.

The planned sites are part of broader government efforts to close Nigeria’s digital divide by extending reliable mobile and internet services to communities that have historically remained underserved.

For millions of Nigerians, particularly those living in rural and remote areas, inadequate telecommunications infrastructure continues to affect access to digital services, education, financial technology, healthcare information, government services and economic opportunities.

The planned expansion is therefore expected to have implications beyond improved phone connectivity.

Greater access to telecommunications infrastructure could provide more Nigerians with opportunities to participate in the digital economy, access online learning, conduct digital transactions and connect with businesses and services.

The Federal Government has in recent years placed increased emphasis on expanding broadband access and strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure as part of its broader digital economy agenda.

The activation of the additional sites before December is expected to further support that objective and improve network availability in areas where connectivity remains limited.

The announcement also comes as Nigeria continues to experience rapid growth in demand for telecommunications and digital services, driven by increased smartphone usage, online businesses, digital payments and internet-based services.

If successfully delivered, the new infrastructure could help bring millions of previously underserved Nigerians into the country’s growing digital ecosystem.

The Federal Government is expected to continue working with telecommunications operators, infrastructure providers and other stakeholders to ensure that the planned sites become operational within the stated timeframe.
