The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu I, has expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term in office in the 2027 general elections.
The monarch declared that there was “no vacancy” in Aso Rock, the seat of Nigeria’s presidency, ahead of the election.
Oba Akiolu made the declaration while speaking about the political situation in the country and the performance of the Tinubu administration.
According to the monarch, the President deserves another term based on what he described as the administration’s achievements since assuming office.
The traditional ruler’s comments come as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties and prospective candidates positioning themselves for the presidential contest.
President Tinubu, who was elected in 2023, is constitutionally eligible to seek another four-year term in 2027.
Supporters of the President have continued to highlight his administration’s economic reforms, infrastructure projects and other policy initiatives as reasons why he should be re-elected.
However, opposition parties and critics of the administration have continued to raise concerns about the impact of economic reforms, particularly the rising cost of living and the hardship faced by many Nigerians.
Oba Akiolu’s declaration therefore adds to the growing political conversation surrounding the 2027 presidential election and the battle for the presidency.
With political realignments, consultations and mobilisation already underway, the coming months are expected to witness increased debate over the performance of the current administration and the candidates seeking to replace or retain President Tinubu.
For now, the Oba of Lagos has made his position clear: in his view, there is no vacancy in Aso Rock, and President Tinubu should remain in office beyond 2027.
