The change took effect on September 25, 2026, following amendments published in Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026, according to Tanzania’s Immigration Services Department.
Under the new arrangement, Nigerians travelling to Tanzania will now follow the country’s standard visa application process through the official immigration online portal or designated entry points, without the previous referral approval.
The change removes an additional step that had required applicants from referral countries to secure special clearance from Tanzania’s immigration authorities before travelling.
However, Nigeria has not been made visa-free. Nigerian travellers who require a visa must still obtain one under Tanzania’s regular visa procedures.
The development is expected to make travel to Tanzania more straightforward for Nigerian tourists, business travellers and other visitors by eliminating the additional referral clearance requirement.
