A young Nigerian battling advanced kidney failure has used his experience from a dialysis bed to warn others about the importance of protecting their kidneys and undergoing regular health checks.
The patient, who currently undergoes dialysis three times a week at a cost of N59,500 per session, is seeking support toward a kidney transplant as he continues treatment.
Sharing his experience, he urged Nigerians to pay closer attention to their blood pressure and blood sugar levels, reduce salt intake, stay adequately hydrated with water, and avoid taking painkillers or other medications without proper medical advice.
He specifically cautioned against the unregulated or unnecessary use of drugs such as tramadol, highlighting the potential risks associated with medication misuse.
His message has drawn attention to the growing concern over kidney disease among young people, with health professionals noting that chronic kidney disease can develop silently and may be linked to conditions such as uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes, as well as inappropriate or prolonged medication use.
The young man’s story, captured in photos showing him undergoing treatment while wearing a camouflage hoodie, has generated sympathy and renewed calls for Nigerians to take preventive healthcare seriously.
Health experts generally advise people to monitor blood pressure and blood sugar regularly, maintain a balanced diet with moderate salt intake, use medicines only as directed by qualified healthcare professionals, and seek medical attention when persistent symptoms or health concerns arise.
For the patient, his warning goes beyond his own struggle: he hopes others will learn from his experience and take action before kidney problems become severe.
