Bayern Munich Coach Vincent Kompany Discharged from Hospital After Meningeal Irritation

Bayern Munich manager continues recovery at home after collapsing during a training session, with no return date announced.

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after suffering from meningeal irritation, the club’s sporting director, Max Eberl, has confirmed.

The 40-year-old Belgian was admitted to hospital on Friday, October 23, after collapsing while watching a training session involving Bayern’s reserve team in Munich.

The incident followed a period of illness during which Kompany had reportedly been suffering from a viral infection.

Speaking to German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday, October 28, Eberl said doctors had identified meningeal irritation as the cause of the incident and had allowed the coach to return home.

He described Kompany’s discharge as positive news for the club, adding that the manager would continue his recovery with rest and medication.

Meningeal irritation refers to irritation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It does not, on its own, establish a diagnosis of meningitis.

Bayern had previously indicated that Kompany’s absence could last weeks rather than days, with the club prioritising his recovery over a quick return to work.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken charge of the team during Kompany’s absence, including Bayern’s recent matches against Freiburg and Magdeburg.

Bayern defeated Freiburg 3-1 in the Bundesliga before recording a 6-1 victory over Magdeburg in the German Cup on Wednesday.

Eberl expressed confidence that Kompany would eventually return to the touchline once he had recovered fully. However, no specific date has been announced for his return, which remains dependent on his recovery and medical advice.

The development provides a positive update on the Bayern manager’s condition, although he is expected to continue resting while the club’s coaching staff oversee team activities.
