When you run out of data on your phone, knowing how to stay connected safely can also be considered a form of security awareness.
Depending on the type of phone being used, there are different ways to connect to another device that has an active data bundle. Android phones, for example, can share internet access through a mobile hotspot, while the receiving phone connects through Wi-Fi.
With iPhones and other compatible devices, internet sharing can also be done through Personal Hotspot. However, AirDrop is primarily designed for transferring files and does not provide internet access.
A security-conscious person should understand that while sharing mobile data can be convenient, it should be done carefully. The person sharing the connection should use a strong hotspot password and avoid leaving the hotspot open to unknown users.
There are also privacy concerns when devices are connected or when files are automatically shared or backed up. Users should review their sharing, synchronisation and backup settings to ensure that private photographs, documents, contacts or other personal information are not exposed unintentionally.
More importantly, avoid connecting to unknown or unreliable public Wi-Fi simply because it offers free internet access. An unsecured or compromised network can expose your online activities and sensitive information to criminals.
Always verify the network before connecting. Avoid conducting sensitive activities such as online banking, entering passwords or sharing confidential information while connected to an untrusted public Wi-Fi network.
Staying connected is useful, but staying secure should always come first.

“Phone-to-phone data sharing is helpful, but one must exercise caution so as not to fall victim to hackers.”
Just be good. Reflect. Stay alert.
